At the time of the occurrence, the 14th typhoon, Tembin, moved southward from August 17th to 18th abnormally. From 19th to 21st, it moved to north very slowly due to the influence of high pressure in northern Taiwan, coupled with strong winds at the east of the typhoon.

After this, typhoon Tembin moved northward following Bolaven, with abnormal alpha shaped path by Fujiwhara Effect, according to the newsrelease from Korea Meteorological Administration.

But there is criteria which justify Fujiwhara Effect (Brand S. 1970: Interaction of binary tropical cyclones of the western north pacific ocean):

1) those cyclones must coexist about at least 40 hours.

2) those have to be a tropical cyclone, at least over 18m/s.

3) those cyclones’ separation distance must be under 1334km.

And the distance between the two typhoons’ TD in 0900UTC 21 AUG 2012 is about 1650km, and 1400km for 1500UTC 24 AUG 2012, when the typhoon Tembin started moving to southwestern direction.

That is, we can’t explain the abnormal path of Tembin with only Fujiwhara Effect.
