Analysis about
Tembin's
Abnormal Path
Motivation
Goals
"Analyze the cause of typhoon Tembin's abnormal path."
Mostly the typhoons start from TD and go to northwest way, curving to northeast after a turning point. But the typhoon ‘Tembin’ which started on August, 2012, showed strange path with ‘⍺’ form because of the effect of ‘Bolaven’. Furthermore, unlike ordinary typhoons, which became stronger and gradually dissipated, the intensity of ‘Tembin’ weakened and became stronger again. It seems to be a result of ‘Fuziwhara effect’. Therefore, we think this typhoon is worthy to go on a research.
About Tembin
The 14th typhoon Tembin, was a TD at northeast sea of Manila around 12 UTC on august 18th. It developed into a typhoon on August 19th at 00UTC, and on 15UTC at August 20th, It showed an abnormal path in the form of +𝛼 due to the Fujiwhara effect because of the typhoon Bolaven which developed on the northwest sea of Guam at 15UTC, August 20th. It went north immediately after the Bolaven and got out of the East Sea at August 31, 00UTC. After that, it turned into an extratropical cyclone with 1,002hPa of central pressure.
Tembin was analyzed as a weak small typhoon with a central pressure of 1002 hPa and a central wind speed of 18 m/s at the time of its occurrence. It continued to move in high-temperature sea and developed to a very strong mid-size typhoon of 945 hPa at 18 UTC on August 20 ,weakened to 975 hPa on the morning of the 24th and then re-emerged to 965 hPa on the 27th. As a result, Tembin moved with the central air pressure repeat becoming stronger and weaker.
While Tembin landed on the Korean Peninsula and passed the land, there was heavy rain of up to 200mm in Chungcheong and Jeolla provinces which was in the left half circle of the typhoon, and there were very strong winds of more than 30m/s in the coastal region and the southern region which was in the right half circle of the direction of the typhoon. Due to Tembin's influence, Jindo's daily precipitation topped the list with 235.5mm on Thursday, August 30th, and recorded a maximum instantaneous wind speed of 43.2m/s in Haenam.
Tembin's path is characterized by drawing 𝛼 shape, which is largely influenced by typhoon Bolaven, which moved north together, and it caused further damage as the two typhoons affected the Korean Peninsula together.
